What is to be mentioned here is that most kidney cancers tend to get detected early. Hence, the conduction of successful surgeries can stop it from spreading to the other organs. One of the procedures for the same is known as Robotic – Assisted nephrectomy.

Robotic surgery is known for its precision. It eliminates the risk of leaving any portion of the tumor behind and also promotes healthy tissue growth in the kidney. With the use of robotic surgery now, there is no need to remove the entire kidney but just the part infected with the tumor.

Robotic surgery helps in minimizing the damage to the normal part of the kidney by precisely removing the tumor along using ultrasound mapping and minimizing the time the kidney goes without blood flow during the procedure of partial nephrectomy.

Symptoms of kidney cancer

  • Blood in urine
  • Pain in the lower back
  • Noticing lump on the side or lower back
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Reduced hunger
  • Anemia
  • Persistent fever

Advantages of Robotic surgery in Kidney cancer

  • Comparatively less painful procedure.
  • Reduced need for blood transfusion
  • No residual scars post-surgery
  • Shorter hospital admission/stay
  • Faster recovery rate and a return to normal life with minimal complications

Types of Robotic-Assisted Nephrectomy

Majorly there are two types of Robot assisted kidney cancer surgeries ;

Robotic-Assisted Partial Nephrectomy

Also known as “nephron-sparing “surgery, the surgeon removes the tumor but spares the rest of the kidney. The procedure includes multiple keyhole incisions which are made in the kidney as opposed to large incisions which often end up being painful. Robotic-Assisted Partial Nephrectomy is beneficial as it spares the majority of the healthy kidney tissue and leaves the patient with almost zero complications in matters of blood and urine flow.

It also allows the surgeon to have a better-magnified view of the affected area and with such ideal conditions, it makes the surgery go even smoother. Moreover, partial nephrectomy can prove to be quite helpful to cancer patients as it prevents further complications such as the long-term risk of kidney failure.

  •  Robotic-Assisted Radical or Total

Nephrectomy

In conditions where the tumor is abnormally huge Urologists often perform complete surgical removal of the affected kidney. The process is the same as that of partial Nephrectomy.

According to recent data, partial nephrectomy reduces mortality and kidney failure and has led to better outcomes. Theses kinds of surgeries should only be undertaken by well-experienced surgeons.

Here at Anugrah clinic, we have an incredibly skilled urologist Dr Vimal Dassi who has more than 17 years of experience in Urology, Robotics, and Kidney transplants and is currently working as an Associate Director of Urology, Uro-oncology, Robotic, and Kidney Transplant at Max hospital, Vaishali.
